Vavy’s story: the power of economic self-sufficiency

With limited income, Maman’i Taba (Vavy) had
to choose between sending her four children
to school or feeding her extended family
of ten.

She was selling produce at the local
market, but the money she earned was not
enough to provide for her family’s needs. She
felt the pressure of providing for ten people
and knew something needed to change. Amid
her struggle, Vavy was introduced to our
Madagascar team and hired as a Planter, where
she selects and collects seeds.

Since joining our Madagascar team, Vavy’s
children are back in school, she is saving for
a new home big enough to accommodate
her family, and she can see the environment
around her healing.

How does GFP choose climate projects to fund?

All GFP’s projects are reviewed by our scientific team and forest ecologists. We follow our adopted evaluation process, which involves scientific knowledge from globally recognised realities.

The eligibility criteria of a project are based on biodiversity protection, social impact over time and carbon-absorbing capacity. The material analyzed includes previous scientific research, third-party evaluations, carbon-absorbing capacity, satellite images, potential institutional partnerships, and UN SDGs compliance.

How do reforestation programs work?

"To carry out our global reforestation initiatives, we partner with several well-known NGOs which directly involve local communities.

Throughout the year, a diverse range of singularly native tree species is planted and protected. The goal is to provide a safe habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna by regenerating ecosystems lost due to deforestation, desertification, and soil erosion.

All seeds come from native trees. Nurseries are used to ensure a safe and quality germination process." GFP

What is the value of forest protection and reforestation?

Trees are the Earth's superheroes: the biggest ‘plants’ on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilize the soil and give life to the world's flora and fauna. Scientific research shows that protecting and replanting billions of trees is one of the most cost-effective and productive ways to combat global warming.

Deforestation of tropical rainforests is responsible for 23% of all CO2 emissions, bringing an end is essential to fight climate change.
